Bat Masterson ran on NBC from October 8, 1958 to June 1, 1961. It was produced by Ziv Television Productions.

Its three season run was composed of 107 half-hour, black and white episodes. Gene Barry of the sci-fi hit War of the Worlds (1953) movie had the starring role of Bat Masterson.

Interesting enough, two episodes from season one have gone into the public domain. They are Stampede At Tent City (released october 29, 1958) and The Fighter (November 5, 1958).

Like many televison and movie portrayals of historic characters, the TV series presented a fictionalized account of William Barclay Masterson (November 26, 1853 - October 25, 1921).

Gene Barry (Bat) was a gentleman and dapper in dress. He sported a derby hat and carried a cane.

Although in real life Bat Masterson was a sometime lawman, buffalo hunter, and army scout, the television series focused only on his life as a gambler.

As I mentioned on the home page, of all the television theme songs, Bat Masterson has got to be my favorite. Except for one stanza, the lyrics are deeply ingrained in my memory.

The words and music were written by Bart Corwin and Havens Wray. It was sung by Mike Stewart.
