The Lone Ranger began as a radio broadcast in 1933. Because the show was a huge success, books were written about the character. Finally a TV series was conceived; it ran from 1949 to 1957.

The Lone Ranger (who remained unidentified and wore a mask) was an ex-Texas ranger. He was played by Clayton Moore (1914 - 1999). His trusty companion Tonto was played by Jay Silverheels (1912 - 1980).

The Lone Ranger fought injustice in the old west. He used silver bullets in his gun and rode a white horse named Silver.

Interestingly enough, the theme to this popular western was not original. It is the William Tell Overture written by Gioachino Rossini (1792 - 1868).

The Lone Ranger aired on ABC. Although it aired for eight seasons, only five of these had original episodes. Total number of episodes made were 221. The Lone Ranger was filmed in black and white with only the fifth season filmed in color.
