Branded aired on NBC from January 14, 1965 until August 4, 1966 (48 episodes). It was broadcast on Sunday evenings in the 8:30 to 9:00 PM time slot. All episodes with the exception of the second season were filmed in black and white.
It starred Chuck Connors (1921 - 1992) as Capt. Jason McCord. Connors had previously starred in the more successful and popular TV western The Rifleman from 1958 to 1963.
The storyline of Branded was that McCord was the lone survivor of an Indian battle at Bitter Creek, Wyoming. His superiors wrongly believed that McCord had fled the battle in an act of cowardice. He was subsequently tried, convicted, and "drummed" out of the military. The series followed McCord as he tried to prove his innocence.
Here are the lyrics to the Branded theme song:
All but one man died.
There at Bitter Creek.
And they say he ran away.
Branded, scorned as the one who ran.
What do you do when you're branded, and you know you're a man.
Wherever you go, for the rest of your life
You must prove, you're a man.
All but one man died,
There at Bitter Creek,
And they say he ran away ...
Branded!
Marked with a coward's shame.
What do you do when you're branded,
Will you fight for your name?
He was innocent,
Not a charge was true,
But the world will never know ...
Branded!
Scorned as the one who ran.
What do you do when you're branded,
And you know you're a man?
And wherever you go
for the rest of your life
You must prove ...
You're a man!
